If you are suffering from Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD), then you are well aware of the painful side effects that come with it. For example, patients with TMD often deal with pain in the face, neck and jaw as well as a jaw that can get stuck in the shut position. However, a new study has shown that if untreated, loss of sleep due to pain can be the most dangerous side effect of all.
A study done by the University of Rochester Medical Center revealed that during sleep channels in the brain expand to allow fluids to clear out toxins that have accumulated. When you lose sleep because of the discomfort of TMD symptoms, dangerous toxins in the brain build up. For example, beta-amyloid is a toxic protein that can build up quickly. This protein is found in the brains of patients with Alzheimer’s disease.
So, if you think that you may be suffering from TMD, diagnosis is key. At Kim Norman, DDS, Dentistry for the Indivdual, we can evaluate and diagnose your condition. Additionally, we specialize in TMD treatment to help ease the pain and get you back to enjoying a good night’s rest.
